I was recently watching the Lindsay Lohan movie, "Mean Girls" on TV, and a line really caught my attention.
For anyone that hasn't seen the movie, Lindsay plays the role of a girl who grew up in Africa and has moved to America with her parents and started a new school - something familiar for anyone that moves with a family from one city, or one country, to another.
The line that caught me was when we learn that Lindsay's character is a math whiz, and someone asks her why she has chosen to join the math club. She replies, "I like math because it's the same in every country."
Whenever we travel to an unfamiliar place, we always crave the familiar - I thought this line beautifully illustrated the way it can be so comforting to find yourself in a completely foreign environment, and yet have something familiar upon which to rely which eases your transition experience.
The other part of this movie that I thought pertained to the experience of relocating, is the desire to fit in. I think this is especially meaningful for kids and teenagers going to a new school - you want to be accepted, so you naturally try to fit in and be like everyone else. In the process, you realize that you may look or dress very differently than everyone around you.
If you're lucky, you'll find a couple of friends who accept you as you are. In the movie, "Mean Girls", however, Lindsay's character is exposed to an entire type of schooling that is foreign to her, and high school rivalries, competition, and behavior she doesn't understand. In order for her to fit in, she has to shed the person that she is - such as pretending to be stupid to get a boy's attention, dressing and speaking like the popular girls to be part of their clique. She literally becomes a different person, and then realizes, after hurting those around her, that she prefers being herself.
When you move to a new place - it's always a good idea to have something with you that creates the sense of the familiar, as well as to seek out something - a restaurant, a park, etc - that allows you to feel comfort on days when you otherwise feel "lost". And, though fitting in with people around you is important in a new culture, it doesn't mean you have to become a different person. It does mean you have to notice what behaviors make people uncomfortable, and may mean being a bit reserved for a while, but there is a subtle difference between this and being someone else.

Lohan entered the Cirque Lodge alcohol rehab in Sundance, Utah following her second drunk-driving arrest in three months in July 2007. This is the third rehab facility Lohan has checked into this year after stints at Wonderland and Promises in California.
But what has kept her in the news as of late is her naked pictures where she is depicting a somewhat re-enactment of Madelyn Monroe`s photos from many years ago.

Lindsay Lohan Day in Jail
Lindsay Lohan had her day in court and managed to plea bargain in what critics claim is a case of justice miscarried.
Charged on a misdemeanor of drunken driving and cocaine intake, the plea deal was made in the judge chambers and Lohan managed to get off with a day in jail, 10 days in community service and complete a drug rehab program. Lindsay has been charged with a previous DUI and this was a repeat charge which could easily have carried a more serious sentence.
Lindsay confesses to drug addiction
Lindsay Lohan had confessed 'I am addicted to alcohol and drugs,' the actress said in a statement.
Lindsay Lohan was also placed under a 36 months probation in which she is required to complete an 18 month alcohol education program, pay fines and a three day coroner program. The coroner program for Lindsay Lohan will see her visit the morgue and talk to victims of drunken drivers.
Lindsay accepted she broke the law and did things she was ashamed of " I broke the law and today I took responsibility by pleading guilty to the charges in my case," She also added that her life had become unmanageable because she was addicted to alcohol and drugs," Lohan said in a statement released by publicist Leslie Sloane Zelnik.
District attorney offers advice to Lindsay
Deputy district attorney Danette Meyers claimed that Lindsay was getting what every one else would after the hearing. This is said to be an option available for all second time drunken driving offenders. However she still has to serve 24 hours in the city or county jail. She is currently being treated at a residential rehabilitation center in Utah. She has to complete 30 days in-house for her mandatory treatment on the cocaine charges.
Lindsay Lohan had been arrested on two different occasions on May 26 in Beverly Hills and on July 24 Santa Monica. Luckily, in each arrest, her cocaine levels were found to be less than the .05 required to file charges on cocaine abuse. Lohan had then been put on rehabilitation although she never kept her part of the bargain.

Paris Hilton concluded her 23 days in jail after she was convicted of driving on a suspended license while on probation for a DUI and reckless driving case. Nicole Ritchie spent four days in jail from a December DUI arrest. She however hardly spent more than two hours in a women's jail.
Former Paris Hilton attorney, Howard L. Weitzman said that Lindsay Lohan seems to be doing the advisable thing by owning up to her mistakes, paying for them and doing the best to put her life back in track.

Lindsay Lohan N*de Photos Leaked. Are they Fake?
Lindsay Lohan just can't get a break these days with every single thing involving her ending up in the media spotlight. She rarely works and seems to be more known for being in trouble or being the butt-end of some kind of joke. It's sad, but that's entertainment, ladies and gents.It seems you're never really famous until there's a sex tape, nip-slip or some other major issue these days, and Lindsay Lohan is now the latest victim of that whole genre of exploitation. She only just finished her Playboy shoot, after saying for years that she'd never pose nude or do any nude scenes. Now, some interesting imagery of LiLo has surfaced online by a man who says she let him photograph her nude five years ago!
The photographer, Harvey Edwards, claims that the troubled starlet allowed him to photograph her nude on a motorcycle. However, these photos are not showing LiLo's face. Nonetheless, the body in these three shows, which can be seen here, do kind of look a bit like Lindsay's body before she turned into Hollywood's favorite barfly. Paris Hilton Apologizes to Lindsay Lohan Over TV Show Joke (Video)
The reality star makes a quip about Lohan's misdemeanor theft charge in a preview clip for "World According to Paris Hilton."
Paris Hilton has apologized for a joke she made about Lindsay Lohan that's featured in a preview clip for Hilton's upcoming reality show on Oxygen.
In the clip for The World According to Paris, Hilton gives a homeless woman a pair of earrings she is wearing after the woman asks if she can have them.
"I'll give them to you for Christmas," Paris tells the homeless woman, who responds that she will give them to her sister and tell her they were from "Lindsay."
"I am not her. I am not Lindsay," Hilton replies, laughing, and then says in a voice-over: "If I were Lindsay, I'd be stealing the earrings, not giving them away."[Watch the clip below.]
Lohan, who has been charged with misdemeanor theft over a $2,500 necklace, called the joke "mean," according to the New York Daily News, and Hilton later issued an apology to Lohan via TMZ.
"I apologize to Lindsay for the comment that I made," Hilton said. "I was joking around but it was thoughtless and unnecessary."
ParisHilton's show premieres June 1.

Lindsay Lohan was sentenced to 120 days in a Los Angeles County jail Friday
Lohan was taken into custody in the courtroom. A sheriff's deputy escorted her from the courtroom, but Lohan was not handcuffed.
Lohan was sentenced to jail on the second count against her for violating terms of probation. On the fifth count against her, she was given 480 hours of community service; 360 hours were to be served at the Downtown Women's Center in L.A., and 120 hours were to be served at the L.A. County Morgue.
Lohan was taken to Lynwood Women's Jail Friday afternoon. Earlier Friday, the judge reduced Lohan's felony charge to a misdemeanor in the theft case over a necklace. The court's clerk office was closed as the order was given. Lohan will have to be bailed out from jail. This is Lohan's fourth stay in jail.
Holley's notice of appeal was filed, and bail was set at $75,000. The bail on a misdemeanor charge was to ensure Lohan will return to court. The prosecutor asked for bail to be set at $350,000. A mob of cameras and reporters greeted Lohan as she arrived at court in Del Aire. The crowd even included one reporter dressed as a Lindsay lookalike.
The judge had offered the 24-year-old a choice between making a deal with prosecutors or going to trial, and Lohan had opted to go to trial. The actress is accused of taking a necklace from a Venice jeweler, Kamofie & Co., while she was on probation for a DUI conviction from 2007.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Stephanie Sautner refused to dismiss the case against Lohan, but said she often sees more serious cases that get reduced to misdemeanors. The court denied the D.A.'s request to stay the order.
In making her ruling, the judge said, "I'm going to give her an opportunity."
The misdemeanor has a potential penalty of a year in jail. Lohan pleaded not guilty to the misdemeanor.
The key part of the case was the value of the necklace. The jeweler maintains that it is worth $2,500, but Lohan attorney Holley says it's only worth $900, which would make the case a misdemeanor instead of a felony.
During the hearing, Sofia Kaman, owner of Kamofie & Co., said she bought the necklace for $850, but the standard markup is three times the value of the item. Lohan has been jailed three times before, but has been released early due to jail overcrowding.
In the meantime, Lohan is still finding work as an actress. Fiore Films announced on Wednesday that Lohan had been cast as the mob wife of John Gotti Jr. in "Teflon Don."
"I'm really excited to be back on set and clear up all the misinterpretations about me and show this is what I love to do," Lohan said.
